Story from our visit at Cooks

This is kinda going backwards, but I wanted to document the days at Cooks.

Karen and Gary were home with Baylee on Wednesday.  They were staying with her since she had strep throat and couldn't go to school.  I was in a conference on Wednesday--Thank God because I never have my phone on me in the classroom.  I noticed that Eric was calling around 1:00.  He never calls during the day, so I was a little concerned.  He told me that Karen and Gary had taken Baylee to Dr. Martin's office (our pediatrician) because her leg was swollen.  Of course, we immediately thought of an allergic reaction to the amoxicillin. I quickly packed up my stuff and headed to meet them.  I was freaking out.  That was the longest drive ever!  I was shaking so badly.  I didn't really know what I was going to see when I got there.  By the time I got there, they had already seen Dr. Martin and his nurse pracitioner.  They were waiting in the waiting room for me to get there.  I asked to speak with the doctor just so I could hear what they had told Karen and Gary.  The nurse pracitioner explained that it was likely a fracture in the femur and briefly explained what to expect at the hospital.

So, we were sent to Cook's Children's to the specialized xray unit.  They did the xrays on the legs.  It was terrible watching her scream and not being able to do anything about it.  I felt so bad for her.  As soon as the finished, Eric made it in!  Thank goodness for him! He is my rock!  I would not have made it through that day without him.  The radiologist told us to wait in the waiting room and to be "gentle with the right leg."  I knew what that meant.  Dr. Martin called and told us it was a fractured right femur and we should go down to the ER.  So, we went to the ER got signed in and identified as "trauma".  This allow us to be quickly taken back to the rooms in the ER.  We were there for ever!  Luckily, I ran into a good friend from high school, Sarah Deeds Riley.  She was a life saver.  She made it so much better for us and explained everything that was going to happen.  I can't thank her enough being in the right place at the right time. (I don't think that was a coincidence though---definitely a God thing!).

During our many many hours at the ER, (I don't even have a clue what time everything happened) we went down for a full skeleton survey. Eric stayed in the room with her, while I stayed outside and just cried listening to her scream.  It was horrible.  They also took her for a cat scan just to make sure there was no head injuries.  The orthopedic surgeon was in surgery for several hours so we had to wait for him to finish to figure out what to do next.  He was finally able to see the x-rays and decided he would have to take her to surgery to put the cast on.  So, they decided to admit her.  But, before she could go to her room, they had to get an iv in.  HORRIBLE!!!! They tried everywhere to get an IV.  Eventually having to get the IV in her head!  OH how hard it is to see your child with an IV in their head!  Then, they had to put no-nos (braces that kept her arms from bending) on her arms so she wouldn't mess with the IV.  Then, we went upstairs to our room.  We had the greatest nurse there.  Her name was Jessica.  She made us feel so comfortable!

The orthopedic (Dr. Kennedy) finished his surgeries and came by to check her out.  At this point, it was about 12:30 am.  We had been there since about 2 that afternoon!  EXHAUSTION does not even describe what we were feeling.  He said that we could wait until Thursday, but we might get pushed down the surgery list.  So, he offered to do it right then.  So, within 20 minutes, we were up in surgery getting the details about anethesthia and saying goodbye to our precious little one.  As hard as it was, we felt so comfortable with Dr. Kennedy.  We knew it would be okay.  But, waiting in the surgery waiting room by ourselves after the hardest day ever was so hard.  We took turns falling apart and lifting each other up.  What would we have done without each other?  The surgery last over 2 hours.  The nurse called us every hour to let us know how it was going and how she was doing.  She did fabulous, of course!  After recovery, we were able to see her and go back up to our room.  There she slept good for several hours and Eric and I were finally able to close our eyes for a while.  Everything was pretty simple from there on out.  We just had to learn how to take care of a spica cast and a baby in a spica cast.  The diapering part is definitely the hardest part.  But, we have definitely gotten our routine down with it. We were released on Thursday about 3:30 and home by 5!  We were all so glad to be home!

Here are a few pictures from the hospital.  Some are very sad, so don't scroll down if you have a hard time with this!  Just remember she is fine now!  And, she won't remember all this---that's what I keep reminding myself!

Waiting in the ER with ice on the leg.  Eric came straight from work so he was in scrubs.  Everyone kept stopping him to ask where things were at the hospital. Ha! Not that kind of doctor!

After getting the cast.  That is a bottle cap in her mouth.  We didn't really come prepared with toys so the bottle cap became a toy!  On her arm is the no-no to keep her from messing with the IV in her arm and on her head.

Sleeping after surgery.

Yea! Feeling better! No more no-no on my arm!

Leaving Cooks in a red wagon!  She wanted to sit up to see where she was going!

First time at home!  Getting comfy!

Baylee's Hot Pink Pants

Well, most of you have already heard that Baylee had a fall and has a broken femur.  We spent Wednesday and Thursday at Cook's Children.  Cook's Children is definitely a place you never want to be, but it is so wonderful when you do.  The orthopedic surgeon was absolutely incredible.  He explained everything to us and we were so glad to have him there for us.  Baylee's cast is called a spica cast.  It is a pretty significant cast.  It covers about half her body.  But, it is HOT PINK!

My in-laws got Baylee a special wagon to roll around in.  It is pretty cool.  Today, we went for a very short walk.  It was too bright to go for too long.  But, she loved it.  She was so excited to be out of the house.

Here are some pictures of her hot pink pants!

She is still happy and sweet as always!  She still never cries and just wants to play all day.  We are so blessed with such a sweet baby girl.

Baylee played in the snow

On Friday, it was finally nice enough to take Baylee out to enjoy the snow that we have been covered in for four days.  It was really bright so she was having a hard time looking at the camera.  She wanted to feel it and see what it was, but we didn't let her take the mittens off.

Snow Days

We have been out of school for two days now.  It means a lot of down time.  So, I took several videos of Baylee these two days.  I was hoping to get a good video of how she moves around.  She's not crawling but she sure has a way to get around.

Baylee loves her jumperoo!  She has so much fun in there.  Today, we raised the seat and she is higher now!

Baylee figured out how to clap her hands today.  She was having so much fun.  Ignore my ridiculous voice!

January 2011

We have had an exciting month of January.  Baylee has started to be so much fun.  She laughs, plays, and moves around.  She is thinking about crawling.  She scoots around in a circle on her arms.

New Years Eve.  We went to stay at Mim and Pipi's house.  Brad and April had gone to Vegas so the kids were at my moms.  We went to hang out with them.  The morning of New Year's Day is when Baylee began acting like she didn't feel well.  It seemed to get progressively worse and by that evening it was obvious that Baylee was sick.  Then, on Monday we went to the doctor to find out that she had the flu! 1 week before she was supposed to get the flu vaccine.  What bad luck!  It was miserable!

On January 8th, it was a cold day, so Baylee dressed up in her warm monster suit!  Aww too cute!

On January 17th, I had a day off so Baylee and I went to visit Mim at her school.  Baylee was in such a good mood and looked so cute.

Baylee turned 7 months old on January 19th.  I can't believe it!  She was so cute sitting up with the blocks.  I have been bad and not gotten a few months.  But, I will make to sure to get her picture every month now.  She is just growing and changing so much right now!

We went to a Penguin Pajama Playdate on January 21st.  It was hosted by my friend from college Michelle Smith.  It was so fun.  Michelle gave the kids a precious book called Your Personal Penguin.  It was so sweet.  Here are the few pictures I got before my camera went dead.

On January 29th, the temperature was 70 degrees.  It was a beautiful day!  So, Eric decided the best thing to do was go to the zoo! Eric loves the zoo and I have the feeling we will be taking Baylee there alot! I think Baylee's favorite part was the stuffed animals in the gift shop! ha!  She had a great time though!

Notice how Baylee is sitting up in her stroller now.  She is no longer having to sit in the carrier!  Growing up too fast!

Baylee's 6 month appointment

So, Baylee had her 6 month appointment on Friday.  Yes, it was over a month late!  It was scheduled for the beginning of January, but had to be rescheduled when she had the flu!

Baylee's 6 months stats at 7 months:

Weight:  15 pounds 13 ounces
Height:  27 inches  (75th percentile)  She's a tall girl! :)

Baylee is meeting all the doctor's expectations.  She is sitting up and bearing weight on her legs.  She is reaching for cups.  She has begun raising arms to be picked up and reach for me and daddy.

Baylee loves bouncing in her jumper.  She just plays with all the toys and bounces. She smiles the whole time she is in there.

She has starting exploring a sippy cup.  I got her one yesterday and she likes playing with it and chewing on it.  I am sure if she realizes that she will get something out of it if she sucked on it. ha!

My baby is 6 months old!

Baylee turned six months old on December 19, 2010.  It is hard to believe that my baby is half a year old!  I can't believe that I am already having to research first birthday party stuff!  WOW!  Time truly flies by!

These six months have been the greatest and most blessed six months ever.  Eric and I have had such a blessed life together.  We love each other so deeply, we are each other's best friends, and we rely on each other at all times!  But, having our beautiful baby together has just strengthened our love and relationship so much (didn't know it was possible!).

We have watched Baylee grow and change so much over the past six months.  She was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen.  She was so tiny and so sweet and we were instantly in complete love.

Baylee is eating baby foods now.  We have tried most of the veggies so far.  She likes the orange veggies.  Not as big of a fan of the green veggies----she hates peas!  Peas make her gag every time I try.  We recently tried bananas and apples.  She seems to like them somewhat!  She seems to like the veggies more.  Going to try some more fruits soon.  (getting the flu slowed up that process!)

Baylee has begun sitting up.  As a matter of fact, Baylee decided to sit up on Christmas Eve in order to facilitate opening presents!  What a smart girl! :)  She really enjoyed opening her christmas presents.  Well, really she just wanted to eat the paper! ha!

Baylee just suffered through the flu!  She was sick for about 7 days with a fever for 5 days!  It was miserable for her (and mommy and daddy!).  We are very glad to kiss her little head with absolutely no heat!  It was so hard to hold her and feel that heat coming from her and knowing how it was making her feel.

I can't wait to see what the next six months will bring.  Some more milestones are coming (teeth, crawling) and I can't wait to watch my baby girl grow!!
